Education and qualifications:
· Mathematical High School - Pernik. Finished his high education in 1975
· History department of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski." Graduated in 1981
· History thesis. Defended his thesis in 1988

Professional experience:
· Member of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) since 1981. At the 41st congress of BSP (3-6 June, 1994) was elected deputy chairman of the Higher Council of BSP. At the 42d extraordinary congress of BSP ( 21-23 December, 1996) was elected chairman of the Higher Council of BSP. On February 4, 1997 together with Nikolay Dobrev, who was then candidate for prime minister, returned the mandate to form a second government of the Democratic left. With the price of this difficult political compromise, the two politicians saved the civic peace in the country after the riot in front of the National Assembly building on 10-11 January, 1997. At the 43d and 44th congress of BSP (6-7 May, 2000), he was re-elected chairman of the Higher Council of BSP
· Member of Parliament in the 37th (1994-1997), 38th (1997 - 2000) and the 39th National Assembly. Floor leader of the parliamentary group for friendship with Greece and member of the parliamentary committee on radio and television (1994-1997), floor leader of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Left (1997-2001) as well as floor leader of the parliamentary group of "Coalition for Bulgaria" in the 39th National Assembly.
· Elected President of the Republic of Bulgaria at the presidential elections in November 2001. Stepped in office on January 22, 2002

Publications:

He is author of tens of scholarly articles, monographs and books. Among them are: "Dimitur Blagoev and the Bulgarian national problem 1879-1917" (1988); "From Buzludzha to theater "Korona." An attempt for a new reading of pages from the social democratic period of BSP." (1995); "The Bulgarian social democracy and the Macedonian issue in the end of the 19th century till 1918" (1997). In 1997, his book "Before and after November 10th" is published.
